Quality Over Quantity: Rethinking Fast Fashion

From a very young age, many of us discovered the magic of fashion by sneaking into our moms’ closets, trying on her outfits, putting on her accessories, and stumbling around in her high heels. I remember doing exactly that as a child and feeling so grown-up, excited, fashionable, and beautiful. To me, fashion is that feeling you get when you put something on and immediately think, “I love how I look in this.” It is clothing that complements your body, makes you feel comfortable, and somehow elevates the beauty you already have. But fashion also has a time component. As much as I love the long, elegant dresses women wore in the 1800s, wearing one in 2026 probably wouldn’t be the most practical—or fashionable—choice! Every era has its own style, and today those styles are constantly introduced and pushed to us through fashion houses, influencers, celebrities, and especially social media. In the age of fast fashion, keeping up can feel like a never-ending race. One trend arrives, we buy it, wear it a few times, and before we know it, there is another “must-have” waiting for us.

This brings me to the question of fast fashion versus slow fashion. Personally, I lean toward slow fashion—fewer, better-quality pieces that are made to last. Many fast-fashion garments rely on cheaper, often synthetic materials and are designed around constantly changing trends. After only a few wears, they can fade, lose their shape, develop odors, or simply start looking old. And because new styles are constantly being promoted at affordable prices, it becomes tempting to keep buying more. I often hear people say, “I don’t repeat clothes.” But when did repeating a beautiful outfit become something we should avoid? We don’t expect a diamond to lose its value because we wear it repeatedly, and a luxury handbag can become even more valuable years later as a vintage piece. So why shouldn’t we think about our clothes in a similar way? I believe quality clothing gives us something fast fashion often cannot: longevity, individuality, and memories. A well-made piece can be worn in many different ways, become part of your personal style, and even remind you of a special time in your life. Of course, quality clothing also needs to be properly cared for, but investing in durable pieces can ultimately give us more value than constantly chasing the next trend. What do you prefer—fast fashion or slow fashion, and why?
